Get Red Carpet Treatment At The Emergency Room

When wanting to know get red carpet treatment at the emergency room, it's as simple as not acting like you deserve it. Though more severe injuries and illnesses will always take precedence, there are ways to get more individualized attention and extra perks such as fresh coffee, pillows and warming blankets.


Instructions


1. Call ahead if possible. Tell the receptionist the extent of your injury or illness. Give her your estimated time of arrival (ETA) so she can inform the rest of the staff and they can try and be ready for you when you arrive there. Different emergencies require different equipment, staff and sometimes specialists. Knowing ahead of time what they may need will save the staff a lot of running around when you get there.








2. Bring all of your information with you. This includes your identification and insurance cards. This will save a big headache with the paperwork that you need to fill out. If you can't do this step yourself, have someone get in touch with a person that can get it and bring it there for you.


3. Wait your turn. Once you get there, pushing your way to the head of the line will not get you any faster or better treatment. If you are in an extreme amount of pain, let the staff know; otherwise, let those that got there before you get registered first.


4. Wait patiently. If you complain loudly or shuffle and sigh, the attitude you are displaying will have the staff on guard. This is not get red carpet treatment at the emergency room. In fact, they will be less likely to want to come up and offer you anything, unless they absolutely have to, if you are showing any signs of being a troublemaker.


5. Ask for something politely if you need it. If you are cold, want a pillow. or something to drink or eat, ask a nurse or the receptionist during a free moment of hers.


6. Say thank you after someone has helped you. If you remember your manners, even when sick or hurting, the people working in the ER will appreciate it after dealing with other patients who are not so nice.


7. Send a thank-you card as soon as you can afterwards. Specify the night that you visited, as well as the reason that you were there. (Many hospital employees remember those that come in more by what they were suffering from than the actual names. Remember although you saw only a few of them that night, they may have seen dozens of patients or more.) It will brighten their day. The more that the ER staff talks about what a great person you are, the more likely that they will remember you if you ever have to go back in.
