Oil refineries turn crude oil into many products, including mineral oil.
Crude oil, known as a fossil fuel, is a complex substance of natural origins defined as a mineral oil mixture of hydrocarbons. Mineral oil is a by-product from the refinement of crude oil. The name mineral oil accurately describes the substance; it is a mineral made from another mineral in liquid form.
Composition
Crude oil is created by heat and compression of decomposed organic materials like plants over a long period of time. As a result, the composition of crude oil varies from region to region in the world. In general, crude oil is composed of 83 to 87 percent carbon; 11 to 16 percent hydrogen; less than 7 percent oxygen and nitrogen; and small amounts of sulfur, according to Penn State University. Trace amounts of metals like iron, nickel and copper may also be found. Hydrocarbons result from the joining of hydrogen and carbon into compounds.
Distillation
The distillation process at an oil refinery breaks down the hydrocarbons, eliminates unwanted particles or substances, and separates out the useful products. The system utilizes the weights and boiling points of each substance as a means of separation. Mineral oil is one of the products obtained by the distillation of crude oil.
Medicinal Uses
For use as a laxative, mineral oil acts as a liquid lubricant, coating the bowel and slowing the absorption of water, which softens the stool. Ingest mineral oil on an empty stomach at least one hour after eating or two hours before bedtime. Mix with a small amount of fruit juice, milk or soft drink in a glass. Do not use for more than one week unless ordered by a physician. Its continued use may cause permanent problems with bowel movements and deplete your system of vitamins, because mineral oil cannot be digested or absorbed by the body.
Cosmetic Uses
Mineral oil is used as an emollient to soften skin. Dry skin results from moisture escaping from the top layer. Mineral oil places an oily layer on the skin, thus trapping the moisture. Use when skin is dry, scaly or itching, or for minor irritations. Mineral oil also is an ingredient used for hair treatment.
