Types Of Air Cylinders And Bellows

Air cylinders allow powerful machines to run using old-fashioned technology.


Air cylinders and bellows are used in industrial machines and vehicles. They use high-powered springs to give force to the machine by way of kinetic energy. Using compressed gas that builds up, the spring inside the air cylinder or bellow is released, which creates a forceful push forward. There are many types of air cylinders and bellows designed for different uses.


Rotary Air Cylinder


A rotary air cylinder provides kinetic energy in all directions so it can be used to spin the blades in a rotary powered machine.


Single Acting Air Cylinder


A single acting air cylinder produces force in a single direction, making it very powerful. The spring moves back and forth in two positions.


Double Acting Air Cylinder








A double acting air cylinder produces two directions of force. It has multiple air chambers so it can give instroke and outstroke force.


Rodless Air Cylinder


A rodless air cylinder does not use a spring to produce force, but rather a coupling mechanism that converts compressed air.


Compact Air Cylinder


A compact air cylinder, or short stroke cylinder, can fit in small spaces due to its short spring mechanism. It produces less force than an average length spring.


Adjustable Stroke Cylinder


An adjustable stroke cylinder has movable stops inside its chamber so you can decide how far the piston can move. This allows you to get the exact amount of force needed to power the machine.


Two Chambered Forge Bellow


Two chambered forge bellows produce a constant stream of air. Each chamber fills up separately, so that while one is filling, the other is releasing. These are normally made of fabric reinforced with synthetic rubber.


Single Convolution Bellow


A single convolution bellow can fit in small spaces because it collapses when it is depressurized. It produces force in a single direction, from one air chamber.


Double Convolution Bellow


A double convolution bellow has two air chambers attached by a central ring. It can produce a large amount of force in a single direction by pressurized air filling up both bellows.








Triple Convolution Bellow


A triple convolution bellow produces the greatest amount of force in a single direction of the bellows. It has three air chambers attached with two central rings. Each chamber fills with pressurized gas, releases and collapses.
