Uses For Red Yeast Rice

Uses for Red Yeast Rice

Red yeast rice is made by growing yeast (Monascus purpureus) on the surface of rice. While some early evidence suggests benefits to the those with coronary heart disease and diabetes, further research is required to verify these claims.

History

This style of rice has been used since 800 A.D. in China. It was prescribed for good digestive health and improved circulation.

Amount

Asian people use red rice as a dietary staple and consume 14 to 55 grams per day. In supplement form, 1200 mg of concentrated powder may be taken with food twice daily.

Warnings

While few drug interactions have been studied, experts suspect many possible negative interactions and side effects due to the chemical makeup and processes triggered by red yeast rice. Because there are many potential issues, those who take prescription medication, insulin or aspirin should consult their physician before adding it to their diets.

Benefits

There is strong evidence of health benefits of red yeast rice from studies conducted on humans, such as one published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (see Resources). It found that red yeast rice can act to lower LDL cholesterol. Red yeast rice also lowers triglycerides and total cholesterol.

Uses

Red yeast rice is used as a food coloring both in Asia and in Chinese communities outside of Asia. Most often, it is used in conjunction with fish, cheese and alcohol products.
