Seborrheic dermatitis is inflammatory disease that usually affects the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis causes the skin on the scalp to be itchy, red and scaly. The scales may be white or yellow. The scalp may also be crusty. In some cases seborrheic dermatitis may affect the back, chest and face. Seborrheic dermatitis is not dangerous, but it can be embarrassment and cause discomfort. Home treatments can help reduce the severity of seborrheic dermatitis and also relieve discomfort.

Over-the-Counter Medicated Shampoos

Many over-the-counter medicated shampoos are available for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. Check the list of ingredients to ensure that the shampoo contains at least one of the following: tar, pyrithione zinc, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide ciclopirox and salicyclic acid. The shampoo should be used daily to get symptoms under to control. Once symptoms subside, the shampoo should be used two or three times per week to keep symptoms under control. When shampooing, massage the shampoo into the scalp and leave on for at least three to five minutes for the best results. Some individuals may need to rotate two different types of medicated shampoo for the best results.

If symptoms are particularly bothersome, individuals may want to try applying mineral oil to the scalp and leaving it on the scalp for a few hours. Afterwards, wash the scalp with an over-the-counter shampoo containing tar.

Topical Creams

Topical creams may also help control symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis. Sometimes seborrheic is caused by some type of fungus. Individuals can experiment with anti-fungal medications to see if they help to reduce symptoms. Over-the-counter anti-fungal medications such as Lotrimin may be effective. Also, an over-the-counter hydro cortisone cream may be applied to the scalp to relieve itchiness. Creams should be applied twice daily for two to three weeks.
