Identify Bradykinesia

Bradykinesia means slow movement. It is one of the symptoms of disorders such as adult- and juvenile-onset Parkinson's and of Huntington Disease. It can affect one limb, one side of the body or the entire body. Here we will discuss identify whether you or a loved one is affected by this serious condition.

Instructions

1. Look at the person's movements. Does he move slowly and painstakingly? Can he tap his fingers or make a fist repeatedly without problems, or does the movement get slow and difficult to do?

2. Check whether the person shows an affected look or looks frozen. This happens when the whole body is affected by bradykinesia.

3. Observe the person's facial expressions. In some cases, the reduced ability to make facial movements leads to an expressionless look.

4. Ask yourself whether the face has a mask-like appearance. That happens when this condition affects the face. In this case, the patient is considered to have severe bradykinesia.

5. Have a doctor conduct a physical exam if you suspect that you or a loved one may have any of these symptoms. The doctor will determine the severity and location, and start treatment if necessary.
