Prevent Bacterial Gastroenteritis

The best way to treat and manage bacterial gastroenteritis is to prevent contracting bacterial gastroenteritis. This is not very difficult to do. Forming a few simple and commonsense habits can prevent the unpleasant and uncomfortable symptoms of the intestinal condition.

Instructions

1. Wash your hands. The first line of defense for preventing bacterial gastroenteritis is to wash your hands. Consider using an anti bacterial wipe or gel before you chow down on the fast food from the drive through. Although the food may not be contaminated, $1.25 in change you just put in your pocket might be. If you don’t wash your hands before you eat, you increase the likelihood of self-contamination.

2. Thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables before you eat them. In addition to washing off common dirt and grime, properly washing fruit will protect you from fruit handlers who inadvertently contaminated the fruit with bacteria that can lead to bacterial gastroenteritis. It’s best to use a fruit/vegetable wash and a scrub brush to remove unwanted bacteria and dirt.

3. Segregate your cutting boards. Use one cutting board for meats and another one for all other foods. To prevent contamination be sure to wash all cutting boards thoroughly to rid them of existing bacteria.

4. Beware of baby diapers. As cute as babies are, their diapers contain all sorts of bacterium. Wash your hands before and after changing a baby’s diaper. The first hand washing protects the baby; the second hand washing protects you from bacterial gastroenteritis.

5. Take proper care when storing food. Food is a major culprit for contracting bacterial gastroenteritis. Use the phrase, “when it doubt, throw it out.” If you have something in your refrigerator that you’re not quite sure if it’s good or not, throw it out. Even with rising food prices, it’s not worth the cost of endangering your health.

6. Wear gloves. If you care for someone who is sick, use gloves when changing bed linen or cleaning the room. Even though you use gloves, be sure to wash your hands after taking the gloves off. Prevent bacterial infections with proper hygiene.
