HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a sexually transmitted disease that affects the genital area of both men and women. It often has no symptoms, and it can lead to other health problems. There is no treatment to cure it, but sometimes it goes away on its own.
About HPV
HPV is a virus with approximately 40 different strains. A person can recover from one strain and get another strain. In some cases, HPV simply goes away without the person knowing she had it.
HPV and Genital Warts
HPV can lead to genital warts. This is different than herpes, but it should be treated by a doctor.
HPV and Cervical Cancer
In some cases, the virus turns normal cervical cells into abnormal cells. These abnormal cells can become cancerous if untreated or if the virus does not leave the body on its own.
HPV and Fertility
Fertility is not affected when HPV leaves the body on its own, because the abnormal cells will eventually become normal cells again. If HPV has led to other health issues, a doctor can provide advice as to whether or not there could be complications.
Testing for HPV
A doctor can perform the HPV test for women. This is a separate test from the pap smear. Men cannot be tested for HPV.
Treatment and Prevention
HPV itself cannot be treated. It either goes away or leads to other problems. There is an HPV vaccine, but it is currently only considered safe for females between the ages of 9 and 26.
