Grapefruit Diet Guidelines

The grapefruit diet is generally low in calories and is centered around eating a specific combination of foods that supposedly encourage burning fat. The grapefruit, which contains fiber and vitamin C, is at the heart of the diet.


Diet Guidelines


The grapefruit diet is designed to be followed strictly for 12 straight days. Then, dieters get to eat whatever they want for two day. The cycle is then repeated until weight loss goals are met. Dieters should eat until they are full, and they should eat the exact combination of foods that is recommended in diet plans. It is acceptable to double or triple portions of allowable foods in order to feel satisfied. Limit caffeinated drinks to no more than one cup at each meal. Resist eating between meals. Use butter as desired to cook and flavor foods.


Allowable Foods


Grapefruits are a key part of this diet because of their chemical properties, which have been shown to promote weight loss. A study conducted by the Scripps Clinic found that grapefruit encourages weight loss by reducing insulin levels. Other allowable foods are green and red onions, peas, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, radishes, bell peppers, cabbage and spinach.


Forbidden Foods








This diet prohibits the consumption of starches and sugars. Bread, potatoes and desserts are forbidden. Also, white onions and celery are not acceptable choices.


Meal Plan


Breakfast should consist of half of a grapefruit, two pieces of bacon and two eggs. Lunch should consist of half of a grapefruit, a salad with allowable vegetables and any type of dressing, and any type of meat in any quantity. Dinner should consist of half a grapefruit, unlimited allowable vegetables cooked in seasonings and butter, and any type of meat or fish in any quantity. At bedtime, dieters can have either a glass of skim milk or tomato juice.
