What Is Qdryl Elixir Used For

Q-Dryl elixir is a brand of the antihistamine diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine is used to relieve the symptoms of a variety of conditions, including seasonal allergies and colds, allergic skin reactions, difficulty in sleeping and motion sickness. Q-Dryl elixir can be purchased without a prescription. The dosage is determined by your age, weight, medical condition and response to the medication, according to WebMD.

Seasonal Allergies and Cold Symptoms

Q-Dryl elixir is often recommended to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies or the common cold. Diphenhydramine relieves symptoms such as runny nose and watery eyes by blocking the histamine that triggers the body's allergic reaction and producing a drying effect by blocking the body's production the chemical acetylcholine. It may also help suppress coughing associated with seasonal allergies and colds. Q-Dryl elixir does not shorten or cure colds, WebMD emphasizes.

Allergic Reactions

Because it blocks the body's production of histamine, Q-Dryl elixir may also be used to relieve symptoms of allergic reactions. These include rashes, hives and itching caused by exposure to allergens. For severe allergic reactions, seek immediate medical attention.

Sleep and Motion Sickness

Q-Dryl causes drowsiness and may be recommended to induce sleep in adults. Take the elixir 30 minutes before bedtime, nightly for up to two weeks. Contact your doctor if sleep difficulties last longer than two weeks. Q-Dryl should not be used for sleep difficulties in children unless directed by the child's doctor. Q-Dryl elixir may also be recommended to prevent or relieve motion sickness. For the best symptom relief, take the elixir 30 minutes before traveling or pursuing other activities that cause motion sickness.

Side Effects and Warnings

The most common side effects of Q-Dryl elixir are sleepiness or fatigue. Other side effects include dizziness, headache, dry mouth, difficulty urinating or enlarged prostate. Q-Dryl should be used exactly as directed and should not be used in children under age 6 unless specifically directed by a doctor. Before taking Q-Dryl elixir, inform your doctor and pharmacist of any medical conditions and all medications you are taking, to avoid potentially harmful side effects or drug interactions.
