Spot Symptoms Of Hemolytic Anemia

Hemolytic anemia is a condition in which there is an abnormally low level of red blood cells. Hemolytic anemia may occur at any age. The red blood cells have an unusually short lifespan due to a breakdown that occurs from internal factors. A defect in the red blood cells may be inherited. There may be several causes that result in a breakdown of the red blood cells from external factors. It is important to recognize the symptoms of hemolytic anemia in order to seek proper diagnosis and treatment. It should also be noted that some people who are suffering from hemolytic anemia are asymptomatic, meaning that no symptoms are present or noticeable. Although no symptoms are present it does not mean that the condition is not present.

Instructions

1. Observe the skin tone. Does it appear pale or washed out? Those who suffer from hemolytic anemia may often have an unusually pale appearance.

2. Look for signs of fatigue, weakness and dizziness. Does the person become tired quite easily? Is he lethargic most of the time? A person suffering from hemolytic anemia may lack energy and feel drained. Notice whether shortness of breath is present. Does the person become short of breath following minimal exertion? Observe whether dizziness occurs. Does the individual suffer from episodes of feeling lightheaded? A person with hemolytic anemia may have a very low tolerance for any type of physical activity and may become exhausted quite easily.

3. Take the individual's pulse. Is it rapid? A rapid pulse is often present with hemolytic anemia. People with hemolytic anemia often suffer from a rapid heartbeat. This condition is known as tachycardia.

5. Look carefully at the fingernails. Observe whether the beds of the nails are pale or have a bluish coloration. A bluish tinge is often noticeable when hemolytic anemia is present.

6. Notice the color of the urine. If the urine is dark in color this may be a symptom that hemolytic anemia is present.

7. Observe the skin and eyes for signs of jaundice. This is noticed by a yellowish coloration of the skin and whites of the eyes. Whether or not jaundice is present may depend largely on the extent of the anemia.
