There are eight cervical nerves branching off the spinal cord near the neck. Pinching any one of these can result in pain, numbness and tingling. Specific symptoms are determined by nerve affected.
Shoulder Pain
A pinched nerve at the C5 vertebra can cause shoulder pain, possible numbness in the shoulder and muscle weakness.
Arm to Thumb Pain
A pinched nerve at the C6 vertebra can cause pain that runs from the arm to the thumb, as well as weakness in the arm and wrist.
Arm to Middle Finger Pain
A pinched nerve at the C7 vertebra causes pain that runs from the arm to the middle finger, sometimes causing numbness and tingling as well. Weakness in the arm and wrist may also occur.
Hand Dysfunction
A pinched nerve at the C8 vertebra causes numbness, tingling and dysfunction of the hand as this is the nerve that controls the small muscles of the hand.
Neck Pain
Any pinched nerve in the cervical spine will likely cause neck pain.
