An Ethernet router connects a single modem to multiple computers.
An Ethernet router allows you to connect a modem to multiple computers to share the Internet connection between devices. In addition to sharing a single Internet connection, a router enables you to create a home network, which can be used to share files and folders between authorized computers on your network. With a router, you can connect up to four computers to your modem using Ethernet cables. The router correctly routes traffic from your computers to the modem so a single Internet connection is shared simultaneously between devices.
Instructions
1. Plug an Ethernet cord into your modem and connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your router's first port. The router's first port is usually the one labeled Internet, WLAN, WAN or Uplink, depending on your router model.
2. Connect your router's power cable and plug it into a wall outlet. Press your router's power button if it has one and allow at least 30 seconds for it to start. Check the router's front panel lights to ensure it is connected to your modem.
3. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the router's second port and run it to the first computer you want to connect to your modem for an Internet connection. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet port on your computer's rear panel.
4. Connect another Ethernet cable to your router's third port and plug it into the second computer you want to connect to your modem. Use a separate Ethernet cable in each router port to connect additional computers.
5. Shut down the computers connected to the modem through the router. Start each computer connected to the router. Your computers are now connected to the modem through your router and share the Internet connection.
Tips Warnings
Shut down each device in your network, including the router and modem, and reboot each one starting with the modem if your computers can't connect to the Internet.
