Home Remedies for Gas Trouble

Gas can be a painful and embarrassing experience for anyone. It can be brought on by spicy foods, certain diets, as a side effect of medications or for seemingly no reason at all. Whatever causes it, there are many different ways of easing the discomfort of excess or trapped gas. Luckily, the embarrassment of going to the local drugstore to pick up some over-the-counter gas medicine can be avoided. There are plenty of things you can find around the house that just may help you get back to normal.

Chamomile

Chamomile is known for its calming effects on the body. This goes for your digestive system also. To relieve gas, make a cup of chamomile tea. Chamomile tea is a popular variety of herbal tea that can be found in most grocery stores. Just steep according to the directions and enjoy. The herb helps to expel trapped gas in the intestines. Chamomile is safe and soothing. Because it is an herbal tea and does not actually contain tea leaves, it is caffeine-free. This remedy can even be used for babies.

Activated Charcoal

You can take a couple of tablets of activated charcoal before and after meals to help prevent and relieve gas. The charcoal binds to gas. If you are on any other medications, talk to a doctor before trying this remedy. It can bind to anything, so it will bind to other medications. This remedy should be used only once in a while and not on a regular basis.

Peppermint

Peppermint is also known to help relieve gas. It has a calming effect and will help the body relax to expel the gas. It also has properties that help to move along trapped gas. It can also act as a pain reliever and helps to numb the digestive tract. Just like chamomile, peppermint tea is available at most grocery stores. This is also safe for children because it is natural and caffeine-free.

Exercise

Participate in some kind of moderate exercise. Moving and stretching your body can help move along any trapped gas in the intestinal tract. It gets the blood flowing to these parts of your body, which helps expel gas.

Water

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. This will help to flush out your system, taking gas with it.

Ginger

Some people swear by ginger's gas-relieving powers. Ginger has an enzyme in it that relieves gas and eases the cramping and pain that comes along with it. You can consume ginger in different forms.

Fennel

Fennel is a type of seed that can be used to prevent and relieve gas. It also aids in the relief of other digestive problems like indigestion and stomachaches, which often go along with gas. It does this by increasing gastric juice production, which aids in the digestive process. Fennel seeds can be chewed or can be used to make a tea.
