Uses For Boswellia

Boswellia has a long history of use and is one of the most respected herbs in the Indian system of ayurvedic medicine. It has strong anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. Besides its use as a general pain reliever, there are many specific conditions that can be treated with this herb.

Arthritis

Boswellic acids, the most beneficial compounds in this herb, inhibit hormonal processes that cause inflammation and pain. They reduce the amount of inflamed tissue, increase blood supply to affected joints, and facilitate the repair of blood vessels harmed by inflammation. These benefits apply to both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Additionally, boswellia does not produce the side effects that are common to standard anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic medications, such as ulcers, irritation, and the negative impact on heart rate and blood pressure.

Dry or Mature Skin

Boswellia is used in cosmetics and skin care products because it helps rejuvenate the skin by promoting the development of new skin cells. This helps give skin a more youthful appearance. This herb also increases oil production in dry skin.

Ulcerative Colitis

A study conducted in 2001 at the Jammu Medical College in India followed 30 patients with ulcerative colitis. Twenty of these patients took 300 milligrams of boswellia three times a week for six weeks, while the other ten were given one gram of sulfasalazine three times a day, a common drug used to treat this condition. Fourteen of the twenty people treated with boswellia experienced total remission as did four of the ten people taking the standard treatment.

Asthma

A study published in the November 1998 European Journal of Medical Research examined the effects of boswellia on 40 patients with asthma. They were given 300 milligrams of the herb three times a day for six weeks. At the end of the trial, 70 percent reported a reduction in symptoms and the number of attacks.

Considerations for Use

This herb is very safe and side effects are rare and quite mild. The effects include skin rash, nausea and diarrhea. Since it stimulates blood circulation, it should not be used by pregnant women. This herb usually needs to be taken for at least six weeks to bring about noticeable change so consistent use is important. According the Dr. Ray Sahelian, a natural health expert, ideal dosage is 300 to 500 milligrams three times daily.
