Home Remedies For Large Facial Pores

One of the main causes of large facial pores is excessive oil. The body has sebaceous glands that produce sebum or oil to moisturize the skin. But with some people the glands become overstimulated (maybe due to hormonal fluctuations) and produce too much oil, which enlarges the pores. If these enlarged pores are also clogged with dead skin cell and dirt, skin blemishes occur. Home remedies to treat facial pores will also help to treat skin blemishes caused by clogged pores, such as acne.

Use Steam

Steam is a great way to clean the pores. The hot air softens the sebum and allows it to flow from the pores. A facial sauna is a good beauty appliance to regularly steam-clean the face. But you can also boil a pot of water on the stove. After the boiling stops, turn off the stove. Bend over the pot with a towel around your head to contain the steam. Stand 5 to 6 inches from the pot so you don't get burned by the steam. Allow the steam to clean the pores for 5 to 10 minutes.

Use Baking Soda or Salt

Both baking soda and salt have tiny granules that can enter the pores and scrub them clean. Cleaning out the pores makes them smaller. Make a paste using water and baking soda, or one of salt and water. Apply either paste to the face, and massage into the skin. If you clean the skin in this manner after a facial steam, you will really deep-clean the pores.

Using Olive Oil

In the book "Secret Food Cures" by Joan and Lydia Wilen, the authors write that extra-virgin olive oil applied to the face in a thin layer on a regular basis can make facial pores smaller. No explanation is given as to how the olive oil works to minimize pores, but this is a folk remedy that some people say works.

Using Buttermilk

In the book "Secret Food Cures," the Wilen sisters also suggest using buttermilk every night. After you wash your face, use a cotton ball to dab buttermilk on the face. Let the buttermilk stay on the face for 20 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Buttermilk has lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid. The lactic acid cleans the face and pores.
