Congestion & Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an infection in which the bronchial tubes become inflamed. It usually stems from a cold or other type of respiratory infection, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is important to recognize the symptoms of bronchitis, including congestion, and know the best way to treat the condition.

Effects

People with bronchitis will likely experience congestion, coughing, chills, wheezing and excessive mucus. Even after the other symptoms clear up, a cough may linger for a few weeks.

Types

Acute bronchitis is often caused by a virus and will likely clear up on its own. Chronic bronchitis is a more serious form of the disease, often caused by smoking and constant exposure to pollutants.

Identification

To diagnose you with bronchitis, your doctor will likely listen for congestion in your chest and lungs. If a serious infection is suspected, your doctor may order an X-ray of your chest.

Prevention/Solution

In most cases rest, drinking lots of fluids and taking over-the-counter decongestants are enough to make bronchitis and congestion go away. However, if the disease is chronic, your doctor may put you on antibiotics to treat the infection.

Warning

In most cases bronchitis is nothing to worry about it, but if it becomes chronic it can lead to issues such as pneumonia and asthma.
