Face Massages

Face massages are an easy way to reduce tension and prevent the formation of wrinkles. They soften and exfoliate the skin, stimulate circulation and reduce stress. Face massages require only a few minutes of time, and they can be done anywhere. Because of this, they are an excellent means of improving both beauty and health.


In a society where beauty is highly regarded and stress is a normal part of life, face massages are becoming increasingly more frequent in daily life. Face massages can reduce the signs of aging and relieve stress, and they are an excellent treatment for many types of headaches, including migraines and tension headaches. As the benefits of face massage become more apparent, some U.S. companies are even offering daily massages to their employees to decrease stress, improve concentration, reduce fatigue and boost self-confidence.


Face massages vary depending on the methods of the practitioner, the preferences of the recipient, the types of herbs or creams used and the style of the massage given. The most commonly performed type of face massage is a simple technique of circular strokes that is widely used at beauty clinics and spas. Sometimes essential oils, herbs, cold or hot stones or a variety of these are added to a standard face massage to aid in relaxation and pleasure or to improve circulation. Many face massages are performed in conjunction with head massages, the most common variation of which is Indian head massage.


Face massages offer a variety of benefits, from muscle relaxation to wrinkle reduction. When properly done, the strokes used during face massages help break down toxins and improve blood circulation, and may offer relief from tension, fatigue, sinusitis and migraine headaches. Face massage also helps prevent the formation of tension lines and wrinkles and reduces facial puffiness by relaxing the muscles and stimulating blood flow beneath the skin. Massage works by stimulating circulation, increasing the concentration of oxygen in the face, stimulating the production of collagen and tightening the skin tissue. Plus, it feels wonderful.


Face massages involve a variety of techniques and movements, and typically focus on pressure points located on the face. A standard face massage lasts from 20 to 40 minutes, and may be included as part of a head, shoulders or full-body massage. The massage can be performed in a seated or sleeping position, using creams or oils, or as part of a facial involving the use of heated stones, ointments or exfoliation. In most spas that perform face massages, the recipient lies face up on a massage table. The therapist stands at the head of the table while performing the massage, and the recipient remains clothed throughout the procedure. Face massages are very relaxing, and many people fall asleep during or shortly after the massage. Most therapists usually permit a short nap of 10 to 20 minutes following a face massage.


Not everyone should receive a face massage, including those with skin disorders or conditions that affect circulation in the head or neck. All traces of makeup should be removed before a face massage is given to prevent skin irritation, and facial massage should always be performed using a light stroke. Because of the delicate nature of facial skin, and the risk of ruptured blood vessels and bruising, face massages should not last more than 30 minutes in most cases. Creams or oils should not be used on those with sensitive skin or a history of allergies.
