Home Remedies For Constipation

Constipation is an uncomfortable condition marked by an inability to pass stools on a regular basis or straining to pass stools that are hard and dry. Simple lifestyle changes often can alleviate the problem of chronic constipation, and occasional supplements produce quick results.

Water

Increase your consumption of water. Recommended intake varies by individual. If you are constipated, try to double the amount of water you currently drink daily to allow more water to be absorbed by your stool, making it softer and easier to pass.

Fiber

Increase your intake of high-fiber foods to reach a recommended intake of about 25 grams per day. High-fiber foods include whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. Eating dried fruits such as prunes and apricots quickly alleviates constipation for many people.

Exercise

Regular exercise helps stool move through the colon. Try to walk or get other exercise daily.

Supplements

A multitude of over-the-counter laxative pills and liquids are available that generally produce results within one day. These products should be used only occasionally to avoid dependence on them.

Enemas

Over-the-counter enemas are liquid saline solutions in specially designed containers that are inserted into the rectum to stimulate intestinal muscles to produce a bowel movement. Enemas work quickly, often producing a strong urge to have a bowel movement within minutes.
