Problems After Shoulder Surgery

The shoulder is susceptible to injury because of its flexibility and range of motion. Some of the problems that occur with a shoulder are damage to the rotator cuff, fractured collarbone and/or joint separation, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which can cause degeneration of bone and the surrounding tissue. Nonsurgical methods of treatment, such as rehabilitative exercises, are often recommended. If this does not solve the problem, then surgery may be the only other option. It is important to discuss the surgery and any problems that could occur after shoulder surgery with an orthopedic surgeon.

Blood Clots

Blood clots may form in veins, but this usually happens as a result of inactivity. Blood clots can prevent blood from flowing and may even enter the heart or lungs. Blood clots after shoulder surgery are common in patients who are overweight, have had them before or who have cancer. To help prevent blood clots you should eat less salt, do not cross your legs, do not stand for more than an hour at a time, do the exercises the doctor prescribed and take all medications that are given to you.

Infection

Another problem following shoulder surgery is infection in the incision area or even in the shoulder joint itself. Antibiotics will be given before the surgery, and the physician may suggest dental work that needs to be done before surgery in order to reduce the chance of infection. A doctor will monitor the risk of infection, especially if you have chronic health problems, such as diabetes or diseases of the liver and other organs. Fever can occur with infection, along with pain and swelling.

Dislocation

Dislocation happens when bones in a joint are misaligned and/or possibly due to a a sudden movement or impact. The upper arm can experience dislocation when stretching or making an awkward movement after shoulder surgery. It is thus important to keep your elbow stable and avoid moving your arm backwards.

Fracture

Fracture, or a break in the bone, may occur after some shoulder surgeries, although it is rare. Take care not to bump into anything, and watch your step when moving around to avoid the risk of breaking the arm.

Instability

Instability of the joint results from the shoulder tissues being stretched too soon after shoulder surgery. This may further result in the new joint pieces loosening. Instability of the shoulder can be avoided by not extending your arm until the shoulder has healed.
