Most people have heard of liposuction as a method for removing fat. A different technique, called mesotherapy, approaches the same problem in a different way. Because there have been very few controlled studies on mesotherapy, some experts doubt its efficacy. However, it continues to give hope to those who are contemplating liposuction but want a less invasive procedure.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a process that essentially vacuums out fat deposits from beneath your skin. The patient is usually under local or general anesthesia, or heavily sedated.
What Is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a process that injects medication into the layer of fat and connective tissue beneath your skin. The medication supposedly removes the fat from the fat cells. Mesotherapy was invented in 1952 by French physician Dr. Michel Pistor.
Difference Between Procedures
Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure, whereas liposuction is much more invasive. In contrast to mesotherapy, liposuction cannot be used on areas that contain cellulite.
Difference in Results
There are several reasons people might choose mesotherapy over liposuction. It can take up to three months to see results from liposuction whereas patients can supposedly see results from mesotherapy in weeks. Liposuction can also cause skin to become loose and weak, while mesotherapy tightens and strengthens skin. If you regain weight after liposuction, it may appear in abnormal places. The same weight gain after mesotherapy will appear in the same places the fat was taken from.
Difference in Patient Experience
After a liposuction procedure, you must wear restrictive clothing for several weeks. After a mesotherapy procedure, you can wear your normal clothes immediately. You may experience bruising and pain after liposuction, but these effects do not normally appear after mesotherapy.
Treating Liposuction Problems With Mesotherapy
Some patients who have undergone liposuction develop divots and lumps, which can be treated with mesotherapy.
