Facts Kunzite Mineral

When the mineral spodumene has a pink to light purple hue, it is called kunzite. Kunzite is considered to be a semi-precious stone and is often used to make pendants and brooches rather than smaller pieces of jewelry. The mineral was named after American gemologist George Frederick Knuz.

Discovery

Kunzite was discovered near Santa Barbara, California in 1902. The mineral has since been found in several locations and is mined in Brazil, Afghanistan and Madagascar.

Kunzite Confusion

It is common for people to mistake kunzite for rose quartz, tourmaline and synthetic pink sapphires.

Hardness

Despite being rated as a 7 on the hardness scale, kunzite will break easily if the proper amount of force is applied to the correct spot on the stone.

Color Loss

Kunzite loses its color when exposed to heat and direct light.

Healing

Some people believe that kunzite can help to ward off negativity, foster feelings of self-assurance and contentment and help people meditate more deeply.
