Choose The Right Color Window Treatment

Your window treatments should complement the other colors in your room.

Window treatments come in a variety of styles and colors, from elaborate draperies to simple panels. No matter what your decorating style, the color of your window treatments can enhance the color scheme of your room.

Instructions

1. Use your favorite colors for your window treatments. Neutral colors like cream and beige might make your home seem cookie-cutter rather than warm and inviting. If you are attracted to bold colors like red or green but worry that the colors might not work in your home, try lighter shades of your favorite colors on your window treatments to see if you like how it looks.

2. Match colors you already have in your d cor. If your window treatment includes a color from a large piece of furniture, pillows or accessories, it will give the room a sense of unity. Solid colors work well and create a nice contrast when used in a room with patterned furniture. A bold green window treatment, for example, would work well with a floral-patterned sofa. If all the colors you choose are complementary, you should be able to successfully mix floral, checks and stripes.

3. Decorate from floor to ceiling, going dark to light. Keep floors dark, window treatments in a middle range and the ceiling light. With this approach, you can’t go wrong, says New York area interior decorator Phyllis Harbinger.

4. Use minimal, but brightly colored, window treatments in rooms with smaller windows. It is an excellent opportunity to add just the right pop of bold color in your space.
