Identify Marfan Syndrome

Marfan syndrome is a condition in which the connective tissue of the aorta, eyes and skin is defective. In many cases, this disorder is inherited. It can cause problems with vision, skin and the heart. That’s why early detection is so important.

Instructions

Identify Marfan Syndrome

1. Be aware of the physical characteristics of people who have this condition. They are usually tall and thin with long, thin arms and spider like fingers. When they stretch their arms out to the side, their arm length is much greater than their height. They also tend to have highly arched palate and crowded teeth, nearsightedness, dislocation of the lens of the eye, a funnel chest, learning disabilities, a thin narrow face, and a small lower jaw.

2. Familiarize yourself with the potential complications. They include bacterial infections near the heart, an enlargement of the base of the aorta, heart valve problems, heart failure, scoliosis, and vision problems.

3. If you have these traits, get a complete physical. This can help uncover heart and lung problems. An eye exam is also needed to discover any problems with the lens, cornea or retina.
