What Causes Arthritis In The Neck

Having arthritis in your neck, which is also called cervical spondylosis, may cause pain, difficulty driving and doing other normal daily activities. Pain and inflammation caused by arthritis in your neck can be managed with self-care and pain medications. According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Library of Medicine, causes of arthritis in the neck include injuries, infections and damage to the vertebrae.

Posture

Holding your head and neck in the same position may cause stiffness that leads to arthritis.

Overuse

Personal habits such as chewing gum, smoking, grinding your teeth or staring at a computer can cause arthritis around the joints of your neck.

Injuries

Injuries from a fall or auto accident can cause damage to the vertebrae in your neck and result in arthritis.

Bone Disorders

Disorders such as bone spurs or deposits of calcium in between your cervical vertebrae may cause arthritis in your neck.

Spinal Disorders

A herniated or fractured spinal disk in your neck may cause you to develop arthritis from chronic irritation and inflammation.

Infections

Infections such as Lyme disease, meningitis and encephalitis can cause side effects such as arthritis in your neck and body.
