Store Aromatherapy Oils

Store Aromatherapy Oils

Protect aromatherapy oils by storing them properly. Various elements can affect the quality of essential oils and make them less effective. By storing aromatherapy oils properly, their potency and purity will not be compromised and the oils can reach their maximum shelf life.

Instructions

1. Purchase oils stored in dark glass containers only. Essential oils used in aromatherapy can break down plastic containers and should only be kept in glass containers.

2. Place oils away from light. Light can also degrade essential oils and colored bottles prevent light and harmful UV rays from breaking down the oil.

3. Store oils in a cool, dry and dark area. Avoid excessive temperature fluctuation, heat and moisture as those elements can degrade their quality. Keep in the refrigerator if closet space is not an option.

4. Keep oils in airtight containers. Secure lids and screw them on as tightly as possible to prevent air contamination.

5. Familiarize yourself with oil "shelf life." The amount of time you can safely store essential oils--the shelf life--varies with each oil. Generally most oils can last months, even years, if stored properly. If the oil starts to give off a rancid odor or looks cloudy, it's time to throw it away.
