Natural Cures For Breathing Problems

Breathing

The process of breathing is a life inducing one. However, at some point many people suffer from difficult or labored breathing, commonly referred to as dyspnea. If you are having persistent breathing problems, this may indicate that you have an underlying medical ailment, such as asthma or bronchitis. It is highly advised that you consult with your physician on these issues so that he can recommend the best treatment for you. Depending on your diagnosis, he may advise you of some natural cures to make it easier for you to breathe.

Breathing Exercises

Practicing breathing exercises at a time when you are experiencing difficulty breathing will help you to stabilize your breathing pattern. Breathe in slowly either through your nose or mouth, then with your lips pressed together, slowly breathe out. Get the most out of this exercise by breathing out slower than you breathed in--count to three while breathing in, then count to six while exhaling. Ensure that your body is relaxed and properly positioned while you are breathing in and out. If there is a wall nearby, lean against it, or try to sit down while performing this exercise. If you are lifting a heavy object, hold it closely to your body so your energy is more preserved.

These breathing exercises are also very effective against anxiety attacks, which usually result in difficulty breathing. Anxiety stems from a deep fear--an emotional state of being. By practicing breathing exercises, you can immediately revert to calm.

Herbs

Herbs, unlike medication, are natural stimulants. They support the body's natural mechanism and aid in its counteraction of infections and other ailments. There are several herbs available that can help to stabilize and cure your breathing problems.

Pulmonary tonics provide the nourishment that your respiratory tract needs to function. They clear the lungs and loosen congestion. They are also helpful in reducing stress and provide your body with strength. Tonics include plantain, chickweed and violet. Relaxing expectorants are herbs that ease spasms resulting from bronchitis. They relax the lung tissue and protect them against the breathing difficulties related to strenuous activity. Relaxing expectorants include Coltsfoot and Muellin. Other herbs include Demulcent, which is effective against breathing spasms and lung inflammation. Demulcent come in the form of marshmallow, licorice and common mallow. To boost your immune system, use anti-microbials, such as echinacea, lavender and rosemary. Ginseng herbal tea is a popular mood enhancer that calms the central nervous system. If your breathing problem is due to stress, Ginseng is a great cure.
