Lavender Oil Remedies

Lavender

Lavender is a fragrant flower whose oil is commonly used in perfumes, incense, candles and beauty products, but the benefits of lavender don't stop there. The flower's oil can also be used as a mild sedative or a disinfectant. Lavender oil continues to be one of the most popular essential oils due to its versatility.

Lavender oil has been used to soothe tired, aching muscles. A few drops of the oil is placed directly into the bath water, along with Epsom salt as a soaking solution. This combination works to relieve muscle tension and pain.

Lavender offers almost immediate relief to minor burns. First, run cool water over the burn for 5 minutes and then place a thin layer of lavender oil over the burn. Lavender oil will also help prevent scarring once the burn has healed.

Treats Insomnia

Because lavender oil has a natural relaxing effect, it has been used for many years to treat insomnia. Place three to four drops of lavender oil on your pillow or add a few drops to a carrier oil, such as vegetable oil, and massage onto your body to help induce sleep.

Relieves Headaches

Lavender oil is a natural remedy for relieving headaches. Soak a compress in ice cold water and add a few drops of lavender oil. Place the compress on your forehead to help relieve pain.

Relieves Menstrual Cramps

Lavender oil is often found in natural medication for menstrual cramps due to its ability to soothe muscles. The oil can be massaged directly onto the abdomen. Using a hot compress along with the oil can can help speed up the effects.

Treats Acne

Aromatherapists often use lavender oil to treat acne. It balances out the skin's sebum secretion, prevents bacteria from settling in pores and also reducing scarring. To use lavender oil as an acne treatment, add a few drops to a plain cold cream. You can get plain cream from a chemist or natural foods store. Massage the cream into your skin as a moisturizer or use it as a facial cleanser.

Relieves Sinusistis

Inhaling lavender oil can relieve the pressure of sinusitis. Aromatherapists often recommend this treatment to their clients who suffer from sinusitis and other sinus conditions. Add a few drops of lavender oil and thyme oil to near-steaming water and hover over the water. Drape a towel over your head and the water to keep in the steam. Repeatedly inhale and exhale slowly and deeply.
