Taking peppermint oil is a natural way for adults and older children to reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, and indigestion. Do not give peppermint oil to your infants and toddler nor should you give peppermint oil to your dog or cat.
Infants and toddlers
The University of Maryland Medical Center advises against rubbing peppermint oil on an infant or toddler. This causes rashes or respiratory problems that can be life-threatening.
Pregnant women
Women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should avoid peppermint oil The substance is known to start menstruation cycles, states researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Children Eight and Up
Peppermint oil is an appropriate treatment for children older than eight. A study conducted by the University of Missouri Department of Child Health and the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology found giving peppermint oil capsules reduced the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in older children.
Dogs
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) does not recommend giving 100 percent peppermint oil to a dog. It causes problems to the stomach, central nervous system and skin.
Cats
Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, according to the ASPCA. If taken in large enough amounts, the oil causes liver damage, central nervous depression or aspiration pneumonia.
