Kyphosis is a spinal disorder that misshapes the upper part of the back, often called a "hump back." The condition is mainly seen in older men and women. However, young people are also often diagnosed with kyphosis. Caused by multiple issues, such as osteoporosis or arthritis, long term goals for the treatment of kyphosis are universal, regardless of what causes the condition.
Chronic Pain
Pain caused by severe curvature of the spine or the presence of a hump on the upper back often forces an individual to become stooped over, which causes pain in the muscles of the neck and shoulders. Inability to straighten the back without pain is also common in those diagnosed with the condition. Chronic pain is often debilitating for the elderly, which also leads to depression, loss of mobility and decreased quality of life.
Breathing Function
Because of the stooped-over position caused by kyphosis, the lungs often become compressed in the chest cavity, which leads to breathing difficulties. Lack of adequate lung inflation may lead to decreased oxygen, which causes a multitude of other problems, including weakness and lightheadedness.
Body Image
Young people aren't the only ones concerned with their looks. Individuals diagnosed with kyphosis often suffer body image difficulties that may hamper work performance, alter social relationships and lead to decreased self-confidence and self-esteem. Improving the condition through the use of braces, surgery, exercise or physical therapy to strengthen back muscles and restore posture as much as possible go a long way to enhancing a person's mental and emotional status.
