Old Hardwick Gas oven won't stay lit
Hi, I did some searching of other posts but could not find one with the same issue I have. We have an old Hardwick gas range with 4 gas rings and a gas oven. Apparently it worked fine for the previous owner. We bought it after it had been stored in the garage for a year. I hooked it up in the kitchen and the rings work fine. The pilot light works fine (burns a little orange) and the oven lights when you depress the knob and turn it. The problem come when you release the knob the burner goes out. Obviously whatever safety feature tell the knob that the oven is safely lit it not getting the message through. This is an old(1950's?) oven so it is not an electric signal as the range is not plugged in. I gave it a clean with a wire brush but that did not solve the problem. I also tried taking the pilot light unit off to give it a good clean but one of the compression fitting is stripped so it is going to be a job to get it apart so I thought I would get some ideas before I tackle that. Any ideas much appreciated. Welcome to the forums. Does this work where you need to set the gas valve to pilot and push the button down and light the pilot. Now once pilot is lit you release the button after 30 seconds and turn the valve to on and then the main burner can light ? There may be a thermocouple that needs to be replaced. It would look like a pencil thickness round metal barrel that sits in the pilot flame. As I'm not real familiar with the Hardwick ranges.....a model number would probably be helpful. The model number is Z8576-35EC The pilot stay lit no problem and the main oven burner lights from the pilot with the knob depressed, but even if I hold it down for 30 seconds the main burner still goes out when the know is released. I have attached an image of the pilot unit, and another of the whole stove do you get an idea of the vintage. The rep burners on the left are wood fired but the stove is not hooked up to a chimney yet. Could not find any info with that model number you gave me. However your old oven uses a safety valve with remote pilot sensing bulb and it has probably failed. Be very careful as these old style safety valves used mercury in the sensing tube and the pilot may have burned a hole in it. The mercury must be contained and not handled directly by skin. Interesting, thank you again for you input. It does look like there is a bulb that connects back up to the main valve. No sign of any hole or spilled mercury though, but it could have occurred during transportation. The replacement units you recommended look quite different to the one on our stove, maybe because it is so old. I have seen an identical looking stove for $200 so we might just buy that rather than spending $133 on a new valve that may not be right. Thanks again Buying a second one for parts is a good idea providing the part you need is working. It's not uncommon for a part to have been superseded many times. Although those safety valves don't look the same as yours ....they may be a substitution replacement. Most parts places could cross over your old valve by sight or part number stamped on it. That's a thermocouple. It appears to be a Penn-Baso. It is quite common for the pilot to be dirty and not striking the tip of the thermocouple properly. Also it does appear to have a damaged tip. Mbk3 Thanks for your input also. The end of the thermocouple was sooted up a little, as was the shroud for the pilot light gas supply. I decided to clean the soot off to make this clear and I took some pictures. After I did this I thought I would try it one more time and hey presto it worked! Not sure how the soot stopped the thermocouple from working but happy that it now works again! Thanks again. That would indicate that the thermocouple may have just been in the edge of the flame. Be sure flame actually encircles the sensor.
