Covering a dead bolt hole

covering a dead bolt hole

Currently, I have a exterior solid door with regular door lock and dead bolt. 1. The door was cracked by on the 1 3/8 side extending, below and above both latches, of the door knob and dead bolt. I was able to fix that with wood glue and clamps. Also around the latch for the door knob I use wood filler to dress up some cracking and splintering. 2. I'm going to use a door sleeve reinforcer to strengthen the door. The problem is, that reinforcer doesn't completely cover the top dead bolt hole and the screw holes on the reinforcer aligns with the dead bolt hole, it covers approx 2/3 of the hole. I am going to place the dead bolt on a security screen door and the doorknob lock on the solid door. The hardware store doesn't carry the double holed reinforcer on a 1 3/8 door. Is there a way to plug the deadbolt hole, making it level to place and secure the sleeve? The reason you can't find a 1-3/8 double holed reinforcer is that exterior doors are almost always 1-3/4 thick. A couple of ways you may be able to cover the deadbolt hole. First, use a smaller reinforcer for just the knob and a second, blank (no hole) one to cover the deadbolt hole. If that route won't work, you may have to plug the deadbolt hole. If you use a 2-3/8 hole saw, you should be able to cut a 2-1/8 plug out of a 2X4. Glue and screw that plug into the hole, then use a sander to bring it down to the 1-3/8 thicknes you need. THEN you can cover as much of the plug as possible with the reinforcer you have. thanks lefty, its working perfectly. I thought of exactly what you advised, with cutting a 2x4 peice. Just needed to know the size of the cutter. Thanks.
