Is a strut needed for garage door opener
I have a 9 foot garage door and want to have an opener installed. The installer is saying I need a strut on the top to support it and wants to charge me $90 for it. Do I need this? Depends..... I know, real helpful huh...but thats the answer. Depends on which model and brand of door. Does the door have a stile in the center of the door? Lightweight single skin steel doors can benefit from a strut, but they aren't normally REQUIRED if the door is in good shape and properly balanced. A bracket of some sort to transfer the force to the bottom of the upper panel IS required. http://www.clopaydoor.com/publicfile...structions.pdf Look at page 14 and 18 in this document, they are pretty generic instructions that can apply to almost all lightweight doors. Most insulated double skin doors only require a single vertical bracket as they are internally reinforced. Wooden doors should also be reinforced to prevent separation of the rails and stiles, but angle iron would be a better choice than a strut. $90 is about the right price for a full width strut. They run about $50 just to buy the strut as I remember. Thank you, I'll just pay the money and get it done right
