Many situations arise when you need a name on a garment, especially one that you do not wish to lose. Schools, summer camps and day cares often require names on clothing. Hats, shawls, gloves, blankets, slippers, baby booties and sweaters that have been crocheted can get misplaced and end up in a lost-and-found box if they are not labeled properly. A way to creatively solve this problem is to sew a personalized clothing label onto the garment. Label designs add charm to any crocheted item.
Instructions
1. Contact a label manufacturer that creates personalized name tags for clothing. You can often find these manufacturers through sewing or hobby stores or on the Internet. Some Internet sites that create personalized clothing tags are Lucky Label and Namemaker.
2. Customize your clothing label by choosing the size, color and design for the label. Most companies will help you design the label for free. Internet companies offer a tutorial walk-through that will assist you with your label design free of charge.
3. Include your name on the customized label or the name of the person that the garment will belong to. The company will require a minimum amount of customized labels with that style, so you may have to order several. If you decide not to crochet another item for that person, you can always give them the other labels to use on other special clothing items.
4. Order sew-in customized labels, not the fabric name-tape versions. Fabric name tapes do not adhere well to crocheted items.
5. Sew the items into the garment along the hemline, using a needle and matching thread color, once you receive them in the mail. Alternatively, use a back stitch with a sewing machine instead of a needle and thread. For baby items, back stitch all the way around the label so that it will not come loose and become a choking hazard. For baby booties, slippers or gloves, sew a label into each item, in case they become separated.
