The pre-teen and tween years are a popular time to experiment with fashion and personal style. Hair color is an ideal way to experiment and create an individual look. Some tweens may be ready to take the plunge into permanent color, but for others, temporary hair color or even colored hair extensions are the best choice. Parents may be wary, but should remember that it is only hair, and fortunately, it grows back.
Clip-In Hair Color
Try clip-in colored hair extensions for a no-risk, no-worry way to play with hair color. Beauty supply stores and accessory shops in the mall offer a variety of clip-in tween hair colors. Attach the extensions near the roots of the hair and trim to the desired length. Hair color extensions may also be added to a ponytail or tucked under a trendy headband. Try blond to add chunky highlights for tween hair or bright pink, blue, purple or green for a fun look.
Wash Out Hair Color
Temporary wash out hair color for tweens is another parent-friendly option. Look for spray-on or gel-based colors, or hair color for tweens in a mascara or lipstick type applicator. Gel-based tween hair color works well for very short hair and may be favored by boys. Girls with longer hair might try the mascara or lipstick style hair color to avoid overly stiff hair. These products last only until the hair is washed, but may show up best on naturally light tween hair.
Taking the Plunge
Some tweens (and parents) feel ready to tackle semi-permanent or permanent hair color. Most drugstore style hair color and highlighting kits fall into this category, as do many brightly colored hair dyes. Keep in mind that some permanent and semi-permanent colors can be quite damaging to tween hair. Choose the gentlest hair color available and try to limit bleaching, either to achieve blond or prepare the hair for a bright color, to small sections of hair. Very bright dyes will take best on bleached hair, but can also be used over a tween's natural color to add fun colorful highlights and sheen without damage.
