Curtains & Sound Absorption

Regular curtains absorb some sound.

Curtains can absorb some sound but the amount of absorption that occurs depends on the fabric you choose, how you hang the curtain, and whether the curtain is hung directly against a wall or a window or a few inches away.

Fact

Curtains are better at absorbing high frequencies than low frequencies, which are low-pitched sounds with a long wavelength. The more fullness in your curtain, the better able it will be to absorb low frequencies.

Features

Acousticalsurfaces.com notes that curtains only absorb sound to an insignificant degree because most curtains and drapes are not thick enough to work as a good sound absorber.

Quiet Curtains

Specially made quiet curtains absorb sound in a room as well as block outside noise and light, according to Acoustic-curtains.com, and can be used in both residential and commercial settings. These curtains reduce noise by up to 20 decibels and are primarily designed for the hotel and hospitality trade.

Benefits

Noise-absorbing curtains can reduce echo and reverberation and reduce interference from outside noise.

Industrial Use

There are noise curtains that are used at loud industrial sites, according to Soundproof.com, but they are not designed for residential use. In addition, they are not attractive and do not look like a typical residential curtain or drape.
