Drawing blood through a skin puncture
One pint of donated blood can save three lives. Blood drives are popular, particularly after large-scale disasters. To be qualified to draw blood for a blood drive or for routine blood work at a hospital, you must be trained as a phlebotomist. Several training programs are available in eastern Tennessee that can prepare you for a career in phlebotomy.
East Tennesssee State University
East Tennessee State University School of Continuing Studies offers a phlebotomy certification program through the office of professional development. The program is offered periodically at dates and times to be announced by the office of professional development. In the past, classes have been held two evenings a week. The classes are usually small and fill quickly, so early registration is recommended. In Spring 2007, the course cost $450.

University of Tennessee at Knoxville
The University of Tennessee at Knoxville offers a 90-hour course to prepare students to work as phlebotomy technicians. It is a non-credit course offered through the office of professional and personal development. A high school diploma or GED is required.
The program includes training in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and blood work collection procedures. In addition, students perform lab work with a training arm and live blood draws. A free clinical rotation with local health care providers is available but not required.

Chattanooga State
Chattanooga State's office of continuing education offers a phlebotomy technician certification training program. The program includes 90 hours of classroom instruction. Subjects covered include medical terminology, blood collection procedures, and anatomy and physiology. Additionally, the program includes 120 hours of clinical education. Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with clinical instruction scheduled during the day. Two Saturday classes are also included in the schedule.
