Convert A Normal Hot Tub Into A Salt Water One

Converting your spa to saltwater can be easily accomplished with the right equipment and a little know-how. The conversion may even have health benefits, as you drastically reduce the chemicals used to maintain your spa, and many feel the water is smoother and cleaner. When you think of saltwater, you think of the ocean, but the content of salt in your spa is closer to the saline solution in eye drops, very small and unnoticeable. What you will notice is the lack of green hair from the chlorine content or red eyes from chemicals, which is especially nice if you share the hot tub with your children.

Instructions

1. Purchase a salt chlorine generator, which is readily available at spa and pool stores and comes with easy to follow instructions. Tell the sales clerk the make and model of your hot tub to ensure you get the right equipment.

2. Install the generator, which is rather straightforward; follow the manufacturer's instruction. The salt chlorine generator takes the salt in the water and converts it into chlorine, making the water soft and pleasant to sit in and killing all bacterias. The generator should come with a pump you will install along with the generator.

3. Add salt to the water. The typical formula is 2.5 lbs. salt per 100 gallons of water. Check your generator for specific instructions.

4. Let your generator run for a few days. It takes a few days for the conversion to complete, and your hot tub should be ready to use.

5. Use your hot tub just as you did before, but now you should notice that the water is softer and that there is less odor. Your hot tub should require very little maintenance, and will provide the same relaxation and comfort it always did without any irritation that might have derived from the chemicals you once used.

Tips Warnings

There are many kinds of salt chlorine generators, some are as simple as plugging them in, so find the one that best suits your needs.

Saltwater can be corrosive so watch your pump for signs of wear and tear.

Converting your existing hot tub can void your warranty.
