Premix vs powder thinset mortar

Premix vs. powder thinset mortar?

How does premix thinset mortar ( spreadset available at HD)compare with the regular powder mix? Project is a shower/bath wall subject to moderate splash. The label indicates that the premix is actually stronger and the long working time is a plus for an amateur but I was concerned with long term water resistance. Any experience/opinions appreciated. Thanks gr. Use powdered modified thinset on shower and bath walls. Premixed is really sanded mastic. Mastic can re emulsify with water exposure. For floors, it doesn't have the compressive strength you get with regular thinset. For large format tiles on walls in dry locations, it's actually very good, but not in wet areas. By the way, did you notice on the bucket to wait up to 3 days to grout? With true thinset, you'll have a more stable installation without the risks of water caused issues. And at $35/ bucket vs $15/bag of versabond, you can buy a mixing paddle for your drill and a few extra buckets for the same price. Thanks for advice. Sure enough, ingredient label on the premix shows glue-like material with powedered chalk and sand. I used UltraFlex2 from Lowe's--remains workable for about 2 hrs, works great. George Raetz I personally think it's tragic that products like Acryl-pro skate really close to mis-labeling their products. Thinset doesn't always = portland cement in other words. People buying materials for their projects should think about what the adhesive is using as a primary bonding agent versus relying on the assumption that thinset is always a portland cement based product. Pre-mixed thinset is the reason for this.
